Baby Quilts for Nancy

I made two baby quilts for Nancy to use at her auction. Because I waited too long and had to make them quickly and couldn't find any coordinates that I like at Joann Fabric, I used the elemens of the The Land of Whimzie precuts to make the quilts. Great decision!

The kit came with 12 pieces - 10.5 x 10.5 squares of precut 100% flannel squares. There were the following squares: 5 different prints.
3 plain
3 print or 3 plaid
2 different print, white

2 small print light or plain light
2 small print darker

Additionally there were appliques that I purchased that go with each quilt. I didn't like the sticky on the applique back so I did my own heat & bond fusible backing.

I purchased the backing to put on the quilt but decided that the quilt needed "more" so I cut the backing into 3.5" border strips which fit fine. There were 4 border strips and enough left over to make the binding strips - there were maybe 6 binding strips sewn together for 2.5" binding.

I purchase a plain denim like backing made by the same folks and purchased 3 years which was enough to do both quilts.

The binding came out great for the first time because I followed a video that I found http://cluckclucksew.com/2013/01/machine-binding-tutorial.html

There was an bit of an uneven turn over on the binding strip so I hand sewed the binding all away around the quilt. I then used a decorated stitch on my machine to topstitch on the top a bit to the right of the ditch, came out awesome.These are the views on the back. This took more time but it came out much more professional and I think that might be my "signature" on a quilt from now on. Looks so cool and it really keeps the quilt back looking good.

Building Blocks Quilt Along

Participating in my first quilt along with Leah Day - http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html. There are over 900 people all over the world participating in this. You cut the fabric, make the quilt "sandwich" at the beginning of the month. For the next three weeks that month you do a different freemotion quilt pattern on your blocks.

 

What the Fox Said Quilt

I named this quilt "What the Fox Said Quilt" because of the current song and it has foxes on the blocks. This was made using one "Norwegian Woods Too Layer Cake" Michael Miller for $21.95 The set was purchased as Quilter's Daily Deal from Missouri Quilt Co (https://www.missouriquiltco.com/). The pattern was quite simple to put together. The hard part was using the minky fabric on the back. I had never used minky fabric before.

The pattern was free from the Fat Quarter Website (http://www.fatquartershop.com/free-quilt-pattern-layer-cake-lemonade-free-quilt-pattern) Row of 6, 1/2'd  layer cakes, with 5 inches cut off each end, one row of 5 layer cakes (10" each). Easy pattern!

Healing Tree Quilt

Healing Tree Quilt  (http://www.fronddesignstudios.com/) made for Rob. This started with a central panel. The quilt design I decided myself. I didn't want it to appear too yellow so I added in the blue color since it's my favorite color. The leaf blocks and stripes were part of the Frond Studio collection. It was backed with brown flannel. This was my first real attempt at free motion quilting. I did mark leaves on the leaf blocks but freemotioned the panel and in between the blocks. I gained enough confidence to freemotion the borders, the sashing on the inside I did by making X shapes. My quilting was less then perfect but it's still a great quilt! He loves it.
